Repost from are deeply saddened by the passing of Judy Heumann, known by many as a mentor, friend, and “the mother” of the disability rights movement. Judy was 75 years old.Judy was at the forefront of major disability rights demonstrations, helped spearhead the passage of disability rights legislation, founded national and international disability advocacy organizations, and held senior federal government positions.Judy found time to serve on AAPD’s Board of Directors. We are immensly grateful for her dedication to cross-disability activism, her ability to bring people together, and for her commitment to AAPD’s mission.Judy Heumann’s leadership advanced the rights and inherent dignity of people with disabilities. “Some people say that what I did changed the world... but really, I simply refused to accept what I was told about who I could be. And I was willing to make a fuss about it.”
