The sentiment Love your neighbor can be found in almost every religious or spiritual text. I have said this before and I will say it again, it is our divine duty to protect our neighbors. Antisemitism and antisemitic acts have been on the rise in the United States since 2016. That is a fact. To indulge in the hateful rhetoric of public figures and then sit silently is an act of violence. To think that the best thing to do is ignore it and not get involved is also an act of violence. You are important. You are powerful. You have the ability to use your power to keep those who are being marginalized safe. Our world is constantly asking us to show what we believe. Do we believe that we all deserve safety regardless of our ethnic or religious backgrounds? Do we believe that we should look away when our neighbors are being bullied, threaten, and wrapped in vicious lies? We are interconnected. Jewish life is a part of your life regardless of the religion you practice. Just as Black life is a part of your life regardless of the color of your skin. We belong to each other. Denying this makes us all unsafe. May we all get deep into community during this time. Talk to our kids. Talk to each other. It takes all of us to make right what has gone wrong.
